The young men who were hired as this new position called "youth minister" faithfully fulfilled their calling, and with each one I was more and more influenced. I was learning to disciple before I ever heard the term.

The summer after college was an important venture in serious adulting. The pursuit of holiness, without which no one can see the Lord. Know how many days that summer I accomplished my goals?

A self-absorbed young man who focuses primarily on discipline is still self-absorbed. Why didn't someone tell me that the mark of maturity is LOVE, not SELF-DISCIPLINE? Maybe Someone had.

It is a special challenge for a younger generation, especially the baby of the family, to try to speak life-changing truth with older family members. Leading from beneath is not easy. That includes my own children leading me, as it turns out. It is the way of the kingdom of God.

None of these are the strongest of recordings, so far. But they give enough of a demonstration of my vision for the song that I hope they are not too distracting from the intended message.

I have concluded two things from my struggles with small talk: First, I may as well go ahead an be awkward on purpose. Second, I want to be ready with questions that are significant. Enter "Captain Questions."

You would think that the pattern was simple enough, and that the commission was clear enough, that if we simply followed them, we would bring the kingdom on earth. However, we find that just about the time that a ministry seems to get it "right," it seems to fall off the edge. 

Prophecy, as I understand it, is far from fortune telling. It is more related to blessing.

Is there a curriculum for making disciples? No. But there are some significant passages of Scripture that address specifically the focus of a young man, and those make for some good rallying points. Here are about fifteen topics, placed in a general order, that might be covered over several months of discipling relationships.
